1888–Today
Explore six generations of tramcars and 135+ years of engineering evolution on Asia's premier funicular.
Timeline
Six milestones. One continuous climb.
Asia's first funicular opens
On 30 May 1888, the Peak Tramway opened as the first funicular railway in Asia, originally built to serve British colonial residents and government officials living on the cooler Peak.
Electrification
The tram transitioned from steam-powered cable haulage to electric motors, dramatically improving reliability and reducing journey times along the 1,278-metre route.
Major modernisation
Swiss-built tramcars were introduced, increasing capacity and passenger comfort. The lower terminus at Garden Road was significantly expanded to handle growing tourist demand.
Historic upgrade project
A comprehensive HK$800M+ modernisation closed the tram for 700+ days. New Swiss-built Gangloff tramcars, expanded termini with five immersive entertainment zones, and a fully refurbished track were unveiled.
Re-opening
The upgraded Peak Tram reopened on 27 August 2022, featuring six new tramcars with panoramic windows, increased capacity of 210 passengers per car, and the revamped Sky Terrace 428.
7 million annual visitors
The Peak Tram remains Hong Kong's most iconic attraction, carrying ~7 million visitors per year and operating 07:00–24:00 daily across its 1,278-metre route from Central to Victoria Peak.
The Six Tramcar Generations
From wooden carriages to panoramic Swiss-built cabins.
Each new generation reflected advancing Swiss engineering and Hong Kong's growing demand as a global tourism destination.
Original open-sided carriages. Steam cable haulage from the upper terminus. Separate passenger classes for colonial residents.
Electrification. New enclosed tramcars with improved speed control and all-weather passenger protection.
Post-war rebuild with updated rolling stock and expanded capacity to serve the rapidly growing tourist trade.
Swiss-manufactured enclosed tramcars with 120-passenger capacity. Modern safety systems and tourist-focused design.
Interim refurbishment of 1989 fleet with updated interiors and improved passenger information systems.
Gangloff (Switzerland) tramcars. 210-passenger capacity, panoramic glass windows including roof panels, accessible design, and real-time info displays.
